Amman Airport
Amman’s major international airport is called Queen Alia International Airport. The airport was named after King Hussein’s third wife, Alia.
The Amman airport is made up of two terminals, called Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Flights are divided between terminals by airline, and the terminals are separated by a small parking lot.
When you arrive at Amman airport, you will purchase a visa, go through passport control, collect your baggage, and exit into the arrivals hall.
The arrivals halls in both terminals look identical. Both have a World News Cafe, a number of banks where you can change money, ATMs (Societe Generale de Banque – Jordaine being the most recognizable Western name), and a few small shops.
There are Avis and Europcar car hire desks in both terminals, as well as airport taxi desks and information booths. Only terminal 2 has a desk for Amman airport buses, though.
If you are in need of a mobile phone in Jordan or a SIM card for your phone at Amman airport, you can choose from Zain, Orange, and Umniah, all of which have offices in both terminals of Amman airport.
When you depart from Amman airport, you can check in for your flight, pass through security and customs, and enjoy duty free shopping and several cafes (including a Starbucks).
NB: Amman airport is undergoing a massive building project to enlarge the airport. The new terminal building is set to open in 2011, so things will change a lot in the next few years.
